St. Maarten National Security Service probe now in “more sensitive phase”

PHILIPSBURG–An investigation at the National Security Service VDSM in apparent misappropriation of funds has now entered into “a more sensitive phase,” according to Prime Minister Sarah Wescot-Williams.  The situation was described by her to the press on Wednesday as one where “you’re ‘d’ if you do and you are ‘d’ if you don’t” in relation to providing information to the media.

“We are now looking at person or persons” as she needs to “be careful” about what she says about the case as the people involved have a right to take counteraction. “What I can say is we are taking the necessary steps as warranted.”

No one from VDSM has yet been suspended in relation to the ongoing investigation. That is “not the status at this time. That [suspension] could come later on, yes.”  A report on the situation was compiled by Government Accountants Bureau SOAB. Recommendations from that report are being carried out, the prime minister said at the Weekly Council of Ministers Press Conference.
